Successful Training for Mentors and Coordinators in the Greek Prison System

The Athens Lifelong Learning Institute (ALLI) recently concluded a training programme for mentors and coordinators in the Greek prison system as part of the M4Pris project. This initiative aimed to equip prison staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to become effective mentors, contributing to a supportive and positive environment for their peers.

Training Methodology and Participation

The training programme adopted a blended learning approach, combining online synchronous sessions with asynchronous modules. This flexible format allowed for the participation of 12 prison staff members from various facilities across Greece, accommodating their demanding schedules and geographical limitations.

The training covered a comprehensive curriculum, including a variety of subjects relevant to the prison context including: core mentoring competencies, the mentoring process, mental health support, communication skills, crisis intervention, self-care and wellbeing.

Evaluation and Impact

The results indicated a significant improvement in the participants’ knowledge and skills related to mentoring. Furthermore, the participants expressed high satisfaction with the training content, facilitator, and overall organization. They particularly appreciated the applicability of the training to their work context and the support provided by the ALLI team.

Conclusion

The successful implementation of the M4Pris mentors’ training in Greece marks a significant step towards fostering a supportive and growth-oriented environment within the prison system. The ALLI’s efforts in organizing and delivering this programme have contributed to the development of a skilled pool of mentors and coordinators who can effectively guide and support their fellow prison staff members.

The M4Pris project continues to make strides in promoting peer mentoring as a valuable tool for professional development and well-being in the prison sector.
