M4Pris Project Advances Peer-Mentoring with Successful Training Event in Leiria
The M4Pris (Peer Mentoring Programme for Prison Staff) project held a dynamic and insightful Learning, Training, and Teaching Activity (LTTA) from May 6th to 8th, 2025. Hosted by the project’s dedicated Portuguese partner, Aproximar, the event took place within the unique setting of the Leiria Youth Prison.
The LTTA brought together 24 participants from seven partner organisations across Europe. The collective goal was to explore new dimensions of peer mentoring, share national insights, and work towards strengthening the professional and emotional support systems for correctional staff across the continent.
A Collaborative European Effort
The event showcased the project’s strong European partnership. In addition to the hosts from Aproximar (Portugal), the LTTA featured contributions from:
- Athens Lifelong Learning Institute (Greece)
- BrainLog (Denmark) – Project Coordinator
- Danish Prison Federation (Denmark)
- KU Leuven (Belgium – participating online)
- SNPP – The National Union of Police and Contractual Staff (Romania)
- Asociatia Vis Juventum (Romania)
The energy throughout the event was one of intense collaboration, with each partner contributing unique experiences, methodologies, and cultural insights, demonstrating the power of a unified European approach.
Highlights from the Training
The three-day agenda was packed with theoretical insights and practical workshops designed to build a robust peer-mentoring framework.
The event began with a warm welcome from Aproximar and the Director of Leiria Youth Prison, Joana Patuleia. A key early session featured an online presentation by Peter De Cuyper of KU Leuven University, who shared the main findings from the project’s blueprint for a correctional staff mentoring scheme. This provided a crucial theoretical foundation for the practical sessions that followed.
The second day focused on real-world implementation. Dorin Muresan from our Romanian partner, Vis Juventum, led a session on coordinating mentoring programmes within the correctional environment. This was complemented by an open exchange where partners shared experiences from the national pilot programmes conducted under Work Package 3, discussing challenges, successes, and necessary adaptations.
Participants were also given a guided tour of the Leiria Youth Prison, offering a firsthand look at the environment where peer mentoring is being implemented in Portugal. The prison is designed for young adult inmates aged 16 to 21 (with the possibility of staying until 25), and as such, features significant investment in education and vocational training, including a dedicated school building and a vocational training pavilion.
The final day began with an insightful guest lecture on mental health in correctional environments by Ana Rita Pires from IPS: Innovative Prison Systems. A central theme was how to recognise and respond to signs of stress and burnout in colleagues. The subsequent discussions highlighted the critical role of leadership in fostering a supportive work environment through trust and clear guidelines, which directly contributes to reduced stress and greater overall job satisfaction.
A Milestone for the M4Pris Journey
The LTTA in Leiria was more than a training session; it was a milestone in the M4Pris project’s journey. It created a collaborative space where knowledge, experience, and a passion for positive change in correctional systems could thrive. The event has reinforced the project’s mission to reshape how correctional staff support one another, contributing to safer and more humane correctional environments throughout Europe.
Stay tuned as we continue to build and expand the peer-mentoring model with dedication, heart, and a shared European commitment.
